Certified L1 Trainer
Derek is a coach and longtime fan of soccer, hiking, and mountain biking. In 2012, he became a member of CrossFit Hickory and the following year he officially joined its staff. Derek obtained his Level 1 certification and immediately started coaching his peers turned clients. He specializes in breaking down movements into their simplest form. That way any and everybody can reap the benefits. He believes each member can build their skills, gain confidence, and stay injury-free.
I had a friend challenge me to join Crossfit, I was mountain biking for exercise at the time but I had never been a member of any gym. If fact Crossfit Hickory is the only gym I’ve ever been a member of. What kept me coming back was the intensity of the workouts and the support every trainer and member has for each other.
Advice for any beginner?
-Focus on form. Don’t get distracted by RX weights or long term goals, if you come in and do the workouts and practice good form you will get to where you want to go.
-Enjoy and encourage those around you. We are all on a fitness journey, let’s do it together.
-Make friends with your weaknesses. If you feel like you’re not good at something, practice it.
